The Henry “Determined Spirit” Furler Memorial Fund
Henry Furler passed away from SUDEP (Sudden Unexpected Death of Epilepsy) at the age of 22 on 12/26/2020. Henry was a leader in school, scouting, the community, and in our family. He never wanted special dispensations for his illnesses. He pushed past all his medical issues to lead a life fuller than most people live in 80 years. His wit, charm, and light are sorely missed. His family has developed this memorial fund to continue the work that Henry was passionate about.
Henry lived a lot in only 22 years. While medically complex from birth, he never let his medical challenges slow him down. He was often hospitalized, but as soon as he was discharged, he immediately went on with life, often going directly from the hospital to school, camp, or another fun activity.
Henry had a burning curiosity about the world from a very young age and never stopped researching and learning. He was passionate about Holocaust education and the importance of remembering and learning from history.
Despite a serious autoimmune condition which would have deterred most youth, he took on the challenge of leadership in Scouting, eventually earning the rank of Eagle Scout and being called to the Vigil Honor in the Order of the Arrow. As a Vigil Honor member, he was bestowed the name of Degugotanv Adanvdo, which in Cherokee means “Determined Spirit”. There could be no more fitting name for a young man who persevered continuously despite the perpetual risk of epileptic seizures. He refused to allow his condition to define him or limit his potential. He was, and will always be, an inspiration to us in how we should always press ahead to achieve our greatest potential in the face of seemingly poor odds.
